Avanti Conveyors stays local and expands in High Peak
We are pleased to announce
the expansion of the business into new, additional factory premises in the town
of Glossop.
Glossop was once a busy hub for cotton
and paper production. In 1887 Jubilee Mill opened to house Olive and
Partington’s Turnlee Paper Mill. The original mill closed in the 1960s and the
site was then used by a local textile business.
The new site is now home to several
assembly functions for Avanti Conveyors who are continuing the tradition of
paper-related production at Jubilee Mill as a business that designs and
manufactures machinery and software for the paper packaging industry.
Avanti Conveyors has already operated
from several smaller commercial units in High Peak for 35 years and are keen to
stay local and expand some of their operations into this 20,000 sq.ft. unit in
Glossop.
Simon Mander, Managing Director of
Avanti Conveyors commented: “The move to Glossop allows us the scope to
increase the production area whilst retaining our local skilled employees.”
We are pleased to announce that we are sponsoring Thornensians RUFC in Thorne, South Yorkshire. They strive to be a community based, inclusive rugby venue and have several junior and senior teams covering all ages from 5+.
We wish them all the best in 2024.
Find out more about Thornensians here or follow them on Facebook here.
Avanti Conveyors are part of the £50m investment from Saica in Livingston
Saica Group, founded in 1943 in a small paper mill in Zaragoza, is one of the leading companies in Europe for sustainable solutions for paper and packaging manufacturing, as well as for waste management and recovery. Saica Pack prides itself on offering end-to-end innovative and cost-effective corrugated packaging solutions to customers in a variety of industries, including food and beverages, health and beauty and many more. Today, Saica Group has more than 10,000 employees across 11 different countries and has annual consolidated sales of over €4.3 bn. Saica Pack operates across 51 sites globally, including nine in the UK and two in Ireland.
“Saica continues to invest heavily in the UK. The most significant example of this commitment to growth has been the new flagship Saica Pack facility that opened during 2023 in Livingston, Scotland,” explains Brian Lister, UK & Ireland Country Manager, Saica Pack. “The project began back in 2020, but due to COVID, took time to formulate. We were proud to open the plant in 2023.”
The total investment into the Livingston facility stands at over £50m, a significant investment that demonstrates Saica’s commitment to the Scottish market for the long-term.
He continues, “A lot of our production is for the FMCG sector, and much of this is in food and drink, so we are an important part of that supply chain. We produce attractive packaging for food, beverages, detergents; as well as many other industries and business sectors from e-commerce to distribution. The strategic investment in the Livingston factory has enabled Saica Pack to further expand our customer base, increasing our capacity and offering for customers in Scotland. A notable success has been the work done for Dewars White Label at the Livingston facility, a successful collaboration that led to two nominations at this year’s FlexoTech Awards.”
State of the Art
“The Livingston manufacturing facility features state-of-the-art technology, and we are really proud of it. A substantial amount of in-depth research was conducted to ensure that the facility would not only meet current client needs but also anticipate future market trends,” continues Lister.
He adds, “A key part of that research was establishing exactly what machinery would be required on site. Notable items of equipment include a Fosber S/Line corrugator, which is a wider corrugator with improved run speed to improve lead times and enable automatic control of running parameters vs board grade. We also have an Avanti conveyor system, which has led to a more efficient operation, an improvement in health and safety, reduced work in progress damage, and maximum converting machine outputs. And we have a range of new BOBST machinery to enable precision printing, cutting, folding and gluing.”
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers, suppliers and partners for their support during 2023. We look forward to working with you in 2024.
The Avanti offices will close at 13:00 on Friday 22nd December 2023 and will be open (09.00 – 15.00) with a skeleton staff between the Bank Holidays and re-open fully on Tuesday 2nd January 2024.

Avanti Conveyors, manufacturer and supplier of high quality, state-of-the-art materials handling equipment, has implemented a new four-day working pattern for the assembly and manufacturing departments.
An initial three month trial of the new working hours commenced in August and has a number of objectives:
Free up time for employees to have alternate two- and four-day weekends and have a better work-life balance.
Reduce the requirement for weekend working as overtime can be accommodated on the fifth weekday.
Decrease in travel which benefits both the environment and employee costs.
Improve efficiency and productivity as the new working day better fits the build pattern of a number of the product lines.
According to a recent poll in the UK, almost two thirds of workers support the idea of a four-day working week. Companies have reported improved productivity following implementation of a four-day working week.
“Early signs are that this new working pattern is working for most people, and we have been able to make some adaptations to meet some personal requirements, such as childcare” explains Simon Mander, Managing Director and Owner of Avanti Conveyors. “It’s a work in progress and we are monitoring the results and consulting with our employees to make this a success.”

At Avanti Conveyors, innovation is one of our 3 core values along with support and flexibility.
We are continuously looking for ways to innovate and push the boundaries of design and engineering to achieve energy efficient and cost effective solutions whilst maintaining the ultimate goal of maximising customer production.
The latest innovation drive that we are implementing is 'Air free by '23'.
It is our goal that by 2023, all equipment scoped within our supplied solutions will not require any compressed air supply from the customer, but instead will be all electric.
This has major benefits:
Lower Energy consumption.
Reduction in running costs – it is up to 7 times cheaper running purely electric compared to compressed air.
Function and control are increased - with localised electrical methods we can utilise mechanical design to provide consistent handling control.
Elimination of air pipework runs with inevitable leakages.
Noise Reduction.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Hanley as Engineering Director.
Paul is a welcome addition to the Avanti Conveyors team, bringing 16 years of experience in the packaging industry working at SCA, Saica and VPK. He was responsible for running various large packaging plants so understands customer issues from both an operational and engineering standpoint. Machine installations, project management, process improvement and lean manufacturing were all in a day’s work for Paul.
This knowledge puts Paul in an ideal place to further develop the Engineering and Project Delivery departments at Avanti Conveyors. The combination of his operational and engineering experience will allow him to support and lead the growing team as they continue to develop state-of-the-art materials handling equipment for the corrugated industry.
Paul’s appointment is part of an ongoing development programme within the Avanti Conveyors business where, over the last few years, it focuses its efforts on its core values of Support, Flexibility and Innovation.
Simon Mander, Managing Director of Avanti Conveyors, explains “We are delighted that Paul has joined the team – his extensive industry experience means that he has an excellent understanding of our clients’ requirements. Paul will have a key role in ensuring we continue to meet and exceed our customers’ evolving requirements.”
One of our service contract customers contacted us late one evening with a machine issue so our PLC Engineer Michael Griffin accessed the site remotely and found that a part needed replacing. Using the remote connection to the control system he immediately implemented a work-around method to allow production to continue. The part was then replaced and the site was back to full production.
Our customer benefitted from our 24-hour helpline as they had taken out a full support contract covering PLC software, general mechanical and electrical maintenance. This level of support gives our customers access to our engineers for telephone and remote access support.
Please get in touch to find out how we can support your production line.
Our 24/7 support centre is open during lockdown and we’ve helped customers by telephone and also via remote log-in sessions. This has helped customers keep producing vital packaging which is needed to keep the supply chain moving.
We’ve also been able to undertake on-site service work whilst following government social distancing guidelines and adhering to customer’s site policies. We’ve helped improve workflow times and provided solutions to swiftly return to full production.
Daily commutes for our engineers are often required due to difficulties in finding local accommodation and food outlets. You could say that we are literally going the extra mile.
Our multi-skilled engineer, Andy Pepper, was recently called to a customer’s site as they had some issues with their production line. Andy travelled to site and had the problem fixed within 3 hours. Andy also took the time to make some modifications to ensure that the same problem won’t happen again.
We understand how crucial production is to our customers and downtime can have a huge impact on their ability to deliver packaging to their customers. Customer service is as important to them as it is to us.
Our engineers are still able to visit sites, when necessary. They follow government social distancing guidelines and adhere to customer’s site policies.
Thank you to all Avanti Conveyors employees for continuing to keep the food and medicine supply chain moving and supported during these unprecedented times.
Your commitment and hard work is much appreciated.
Avanti Conveyors have created a valuable Site Service Kit for your own engineers to be able to fault find and to accelerate offsite support.
Our software engineers will be able to support your engineers remotely when you are using the relevant elements of this kit. This rapid response can get production back online and reduce any production downtime to a minimum.
This kit comes in a waterproof, dustproof, rugged, Avanti Conveyors branded case and includes the following items:
Laptop complete with software
AS-i Programmer
NORD Variable Speed Drives hand-held Programmer
Sensor Checker
Tachometer
All necessary leads and cables

Click here to watch a video which shows the kit and how it can help you and your business.
If you have a service contract with Avanti Conveyors, when our engineers are on site, they will also ensure that your laptop has the most current programmes when they have completed work and you will therefore have the latest software version. Alternatively using the remote access capability gained through this kit (internet access is required for this) , our engineers can undertake a remote update.
The Site Service Kit and training package comes at an extremely competitive price. We purchase the parts in bulk and are able to pass these savings onto our customers.
If you use our equipment and are interested to find out more about how our new Site Service Kit can help your site, then please give us a call on 01663 740011.
Maintaining food production during unprecedented times
We are playing our part to maintain food production during these unprecedented times by manufacturing and supporting equipment used by packaging companies.
Thanks to our skilled transportation partner Merritt Group and the Police for making this challenging delivery possible.
A huge thanks to our team for following safety guidelines to continue machinery production.
It pays to do your homework before any significant investment.
What is important to you when you are investing in new equipment as you expand your plant?
Working with an experienced partner who understands your business?
Having a knowledgeable service team at the end of the phone (or on-site ASAP)?
Knowing you are investing in low maintenance equipment that doesn’t require constant investment in expensive spare parts?
Purchasing a high quality product?
Trusting that the installation will happen on time?
All of the above?
Avanti Conveyors are proud to say that we can meet all of the above requirements. The price is obviously a factor, but it is important to understand that there are many other considerations to take into account when making an investment in new machinery. We’ve been working in the corrugated packaging industry for over 30 years and are valued as a trusted partner by many companies across the globe.
Please get in touch if you would like a discussion about how we can help you with your materials handling needs.
It’s important to source your spare parts from a reliable supplier for a number of reasons:
Durability of parts
Value for money (avoid false economy investment)
Reduce downtime on your production lines
Avoid potential safety problems from sub-standard parts
Prevent damage to your machinery due to using poor quality parts
At Avanti Conveyors we stock reputable brand-name spare parts from companies including SICK, Keyence, Nord, SEW, Telemechanique, IFM, Rockwell and Unichains, Siemens and Allen Bradley, alongside our own Avanti parts, Pentek and ACS.
Find out more here about how we can help you with your spare parts procurement.

From the International Paperboard Industry Magazine, February 2020 - Materials Handling Report
Do I need a robot?
“If you are looking to increase productivity, reduce manual labour costs or optimise your workflow, then the answer is yes,” says Simon Mander, Managing Director of Avanti Conveyors.
“All of this can be achieved by integrating robots into your existing production workflow.”
Mander suggests that there is a critical time when you need a robot.
The key drivers are:
For providing alternative feeding solutions
When fast set-ups for small and large runs are required
If less operator involvement is desired
Because less maintenance and power requirements are crucial
When plant space is at a premium.
“The main question we get asked is ‘Why do I need a robot?’,” continues Mander. “We categorise the arguments as follows. They are fast and strong and are able to operate at maximum machine speeds. They are also ideal for tedious and repetitive tasks and handle consistently and with unwavering focus. They are quick too, with 30 sec set-up as well as being easy to use, with once per year maintenance. We also point out that robots are a true ‘green’ solution as they run on 5 amp nominal electrical usage and they certainly offer a ‘wow’ factor that is sure to impress customers during plant tours by showing that you are at the forefront of innovation.”

Last month we sponsored a group of year 9 students from New Mills High School to partake in a course promoting physics using practical experiments.
The outdoor physics course engaged students to learn about energy transfers, Hooke's Law, motion, velocity and buoyancy through canoeing, mountain biking, climbing and bushcraft.
The students also visited our offices in Furness Vale where they got some hands-on experience doing some PLC and engineering exercises with members of our software and manufacturing teams.
They also got a tour of our manufacturing facility where they were able to see engineering in practice and met some recent school leavers and University graduates who were taking their first steps into careers in engineering.
